He was born in Japan in 1972. He started working as a photographer for the Daily Nation, a Kenyan newspaper in Nairobi while he was a master student of the photojournalism department in the School of Journalism, University of Missouri. In 1998 he documented the U.S. Embassy bombing in Nairobi, which made him dedicate himself to photography. After doing internships in Magnum Photos and The New York Times in New York, he moved to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and started freelancing to cover the whole West Africa. Since 2004, he has been based in Barcelona, Spain. He is working on various photographic documentary projects.

In 2007, he won a prize from Pictures of the Year International. His photographs have been published mostly in American and European publications such as Newsweek, the New York Times, Der Spiegel, Time Magazine, Los Angels Times, Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, Daily Telegraph, Courrier International, Le Point, Business Week, and NZZ Folio. He is also a frequent contributor to prestigious Japanese magazines such as Newsweek-Japan, Aera, Number, and Pen.
