Broken Peace
The Basques are mythical
people. No body knows their origin. But they had existed before the Romans
arrived in Europe. They speak a unique language, Euskara, that does not
resemble to any language in the world. No country has such a high percentage
of Rh negative blood type holders like Basque. Their cultures and customs
have nothing to do with the ones of the neighboring countries. Basque
region spreads between the northern Spain and south-west France. The
beautiful region has been cursed with the longest war in Europe. ETA (Basque
Homeland and Freedom) was founded in 1959 against the dictatorship of Franco,
who banned Basque language and oppressed the people. ETA started its violent
campaing since 1968 for the independence of Basque Country, claming more
than 800 lives. On March 22, 2006, ETA declared "Permanent Cease-Fire"
for the first time in its history. But the peace process did not make any progress. At midnight of June 6, 2007, ETA broke the cease-fire.
